Nike has partnered with Air Afrique, a cultural collective inspired by the historic Pan-African airline, to create a brand-new sneaker-dress shoe hybrid called the Air Max RK61. This design celebrates both culture and innovation, combining sporty details with elegant style.
The shoe comes in two clean colorways: “Coconut Milk” and “Black.” Its design starts with a zip-up upper inspired by the Air Max Sunder, paired with a dress shoe sole that has a visible Air unit shaped like a jet engine.
Other details make the aviation inspiration clear:
-
A zipper pull with the Air Afrique logo
-
A jacquard sockliner inspired by vintage airplane seats
-
Morse code on the outsole spelling out “Air Afrique”
-
The name RK61, referencing Air Afrique’s original flight code (RK) and founding year (1961).
According to Air Afrique’s Ahmadou-Bamba Thiam, the design is about more than just shoes: “The notion of Air is deeply connected to our history... it represents cultural and human elevation.”
The Air Max RK61 is a perfect mix of sport, craft, and storytelling, making it one of Nike’s most unique releases this year.
