VEJA and Dover Street Market Ginza Present Sashiko-Stitched Sneakers

French sneaker brand VEJA has teamed up with Dover Street Market Ginza to release a collection of hand-stitched sneakers crafted by the Sashiko Gals, a group of Japanese artisans skilled in traditional textile repair. This special collection celebrates heritage, sustainability, and craftsmanship.

The Design
The sneakers, based on VEJA’s vintage-inspired “Panenka” model, feature intricate Sashiko stitching. This traditional Japanese technique, dating back to the 8th century, was originally used to repair and reinforce garments. Each pair showcases unique patterns and thread colors, making them truly one-of-a-kind pieces of art.

The Artisans
The Sashiko Gals, a group of women aged 40 to 80 from Otsuchi in Iwate Prefecture, meticulously stitched these sneakers by hand. Their work preserves a centuries-old craft while giving new life to modern footwear.

A Step Toward Sustainability
This release is part of VEJA’s “Clean, Repair, Collect” initiative, which began in 2020 to promote sustainable practices like repairing and reusing footwear. By collaborating with the Sashiko Gals, VEJA combines environmental responsibility with cultural preservation, highlighting the beauty of slow fashion.
