Kurono Tokyo Unveils the Vermilion Chronograph “Shu”

Japanese watchmaker Kurono Tokyo has introduced a bold new timepiece — the Vermilion Chronograph “Shu.” Inspired by Japanese tradition, the watch features a bright orange-red dial, a color deeply tied to culture, history, and symbolism.

The name “Shu” (朱) reflects a shade long linked with nobility, good fortune, and protection. The striking hue takes cues from the famous torii gates of Shinto shrines, urushi lacquerware, and even samurai armor. To make sure the color lasts, founder Hajime Asaoka tested pigments under ultraviolet exposure equal to more than 10 years of wear. Only selenium red and vermilion met the high standards for fade resistance, ensuring the dial remains vibrant over time.

The watch is crafted in a slim 38mm case and paired with black subdials and tachymeter scales for excellent readability. It is not only a technical achievement but also a piece of cultural artistry, making it stand out in the world of independent watchmaking.
