Japanese accessories label Porter-Yoshida (Yoshida & Co.) is celebrating its 90th anniversary in a big way — with its first-ever pop-up shop in New York City. The temporary store, located at 21 Spring Street, will be open until September 7 and offers fans a closer look at the brand’s past, present, and future.
The pop-up highlights PORTER’s most famous designs, including the TANKER line, along with new products and collaborations. Visitors are welcomed by a life-size PORTER mascot before exploring custom fixtures like nylon-paneled shelves, bold orange racks, and even a shaded cart carrying smaller accessories, including a PORTER teddy bear.
Known for its dedication to Japanese craftsmanship since 1935, the brand is also showcasing its new 100% plant-based nylon bags — made from corn starch and fully biodegradable. This reflects PORTER’s focus on innovation while staying true to its “Made in Japan” roots.
Brand Director Kenichiro Matsubara explained that while the company once focused on wholesale, the shift toward retail strategy was driven by changes after the COVID-19 pandemic. He also emphasized the importance of hiring and training new craftsmen to preserve Japan’s tradition of high-quality bag making.
The store also features a capsule by Cecilie Bahnsen, showing PORTER’s unique approach to collaboration. From working with big names like BAPE to niche projects like a special tote honoring composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, the label continues to blend heritage with modern creativity.
Looking ahead, Matsubara said, “My vision for the next 10 years is one of innovation. Every day is a new beginning.”
