Car enthusiasts and collectors are in for a treat as Bonhams Cars prepares to auction the ultra-rare 2005 Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG P900 Prototype. This unique vehicle is one of only two prototypes ever built, making it a true gem for those passionate about high-performance cars and motorsport history.
The P900 Prototype serves as a link between Mercedes-Benz’s dominant DTM race cars and its road-ready performance vehicles. While 100 road versions of the CLK DTM were produced, this prototype is exceptionally rare. Its twin resides in a U.S. museum, leaving this as the only one available for purchase.
Powering this extraordinary car is the historic M156 6.3L V8 engine, which holds the distinction of being the first engine fully developed by AMG. Though slightly less powerful than the supercharged V8 in the road version, this engine delivers an impressive 510 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque. It later became famous in the 2007 Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG.
The design of the P900 takes cues from DTM race cars, with features like an aggressive rear spoiler and a stripped-down interior focused on performance. Despite its racing pedigree, the car has been sparingly used, with just 577 kilometers on the odometer.
Adding to its allure, the P900 Prototype has been driven by motorsport legends such as Klaus Ludwig, Jean Alesi, Jamie Green, and Bernd Schneider. This car not only represents engineering brilliance but also carries a rich racing heritage.
Bidding for this rare prototype will begin on February 6 during Bonhams Cars’ The Grand Palais sale in Paris. It is expected to fetch up to $821,000 USD, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for collectors to own a piece of automotive history.
