Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers Sell for $32.5 Million

Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz have just been sold for an astonishing $32.5 million, making them the most expensive movie prop ever auctioned. Worn by Judy Garland in the 1939 classic, these shoes have surpassed Marilyn Monroe’s iconic white dress from The Seven Year Itch to claim the top spot in Hollywood memorabilia sales.

This record-breaking sale highlights the timeless appeal of The Wizard of Oz and its place in pop culture history. To put this into perspective, even in the world of high-value sneakers, this price is unmatched. Michael Jordan’s “Dynasty Collection,” a set of six game-worn championship shoes, sold for $8 million earlier in 2024 — far below the ruby slippers' value.

The sale coincides with a resurgence of interest in The Wizard of Oz, largely driven by the success of the musical Wicked. Brands are also tapping into the excitement, with Nike set to release SB Dunks inspired by Dorothy’s slippers and other elements of the film on December 23rd.

The ruby slippers remain a symbol of Hollywood magic and now hold the title of the ultimate collector’s item.
